Composting is mandatory in California

California State law (SB 1383) requires residents and businesses to keep food and other compostable materials out of landfills to help fight climate change. The State law is implemented in Alameda County under the Organics Reduction and Recycling Ordinance in partnership with the Alameda County environmental health departments, StopWaste, its member agencies and their solid waste service providers.

The Alameda County Source Reduction and Recycling Board has a vacancy in the “Solid Waste Industry" category. The appointee must live in Alameda County. Term of the appointment is two years, and board members are eligible for re-appointment to one additional two-year term.
The Alameda County Source Reduction and Recycling Board has a vacancy in the category of “an Environmental Educator employed as such on a full-time basis.” The appointee must live in Alameda County.
Timothy Burroughs, executive director of StopWaste, was elected as the board chair with unanimous support from the board members, recognizing his extensive experience in representing the interests of local governments, prioritizing the needs of disadvantaged communities, and working effectively with large public agency boards.
StopWaste is offering a total of $1.1 million in grant funding to businesses, nonprofits, institutions, and school districts in Alameda County for projects focused on focus on waste prevention, reuse, and recovery of food, goods and materials as well as development, marketing, and products made with recovered materials. Deadline to apply is March 14, 2024.
The U.S. Department of Energy Building Technologies Office has announced the Buildings Upgrade Prize Phase 1 winners, and our Energy Council was among the teams chosen to move on to Phase 2.
