When in Drought: Don't Remove Your Lawn, Sheet Mulch It!

California's new restrictions on water use include replacing 50 million square feet of lawns across the state with drought tolerant landscaping. Check out our tips on beating the drought in the garden, at home and at the table.


In September, StopWaste provided assistance to the California Department of General Services for a demonstration of sheet mulching, turning the thirsty East lawn of the Capitol Building into a low-water-use garden filled with native plants.
Starting in October, there will be a series of three meetings throughout the county to solicit input from Alameda County retailers on possible expansion ideas for the Reusable Bag Ordinance.
At its September 16 meeting, the Alameda County Waste Management Authority announced its selection of Wendy Sommer as the next StopWaste Executive Director. Sommer will replace Gary Wolff, who will retire as Executive Director at the end of the calendar year.
Bay-Friendly landscaping along a five-mile stretch of Route 238 will save more than two million gallons of water annually.
StopWaste is hosting workshops in Oakland this fall to help local government staff and landscape professionals comply with the new Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (WELO) requirements.
