  Master Composter Training

Grow a Greener Community! Become a Master Composter.

2010 Master Composter Classes Begin in February.

Sorry, registration for the 2010 Master Composter Training closed on January 8.  Please check back later this year for announcements of future training opportunities.

Inspire others and make a difference in your community…become a Master Composter. The Master Composter Training Program is an annual program for Alameda County residents that promotes composting at the community level and helps reduce waste at local landfills.  Master Composter training enhances the skills of community leaders, educators, environmentalists, gardeners, and recyclers.

After receiving free training in compost science, soil health and natural gardening techniques, Master Composters design and implement community outreach projects—inspiring neighbors, co-workers and children to compost, reduce waste, and preserve natural resources (see Syllabus). Master Composter alumni have conducted workshops with local organizations such as the Spanish Speaking Unity Council in Oakland, established on-site composting at schools throughout the county, and trained East Bay Conservation Corps and Americorps members.

Master Composters can also earn college credit upon completion of the program through Merritt College or continuing education and graduate level credits from Cal State East Bay. Teachers can meet their continuing education requirements with this course—and are also eligible for a $200 stipend toward continuing compost activities for classrooms and school gardens. All participants receive a compost bin and several composting and gardening books, including the East Bay Municipal Utility District’s “Plants and Landscapes for Summer Climates of the SF Bay Region.”

Classes will be held in Oakland on Wednesday nights from February to May. Fields Trips are on Saturdays.

Students pay a $50 fee. Fees may be waived upon request. Certification depends on class attendance and completion of 8 hours of internship and 40 hours of community outreach.
