New United Motors

New United Motors (NUMMI), a joint venture of General Motors and Toyota Motor Company, manufactures various automobile models at their Fremont, CA plant.  The company has many environmental accomplishments, including significant water conservation.

NUMMI initiated two water recycling projects at their Fremont plant.  For one project, the company installed re-circulating pumps in the evaporative air conditioning systems which reuse 170,000 gallons of water daily.  For the second project, NUMMI set up a system for recycling water used in the wet sanding process, conserving 100,000 gallons of water daily.

Benefits

Reducing water usage by over 270,000 gallons per day saves enough water to supply 2,000 households.  From a financial point of view, the $400,000 NUMMI spent on equipment and labor for the two projects was a good investment.  The company realized a return on investment of a little over one year.  See Table 1 for more information about NUMMI’s savings.
