The 4Rs and My Foodshed

Food Scrap Recycling Action Project

In this project, students learn how food scraps, food soiled-paper and plant trimmings can be transformed into compost.  They will learn about the benefits of compost: a valuable soil-amendment to grow food, promote healthy ecosystems, and reduce global climate change.
Through scientific waste audit investigations, and creating a compost model to learn the cycle of matter and energy, students apply their science knowledge and what they learned by taking action at school and at home to protect the Earth's resources and environment.

Examples of Food Scrap recycling student action projects:
  • Students author food scrap recycling themed books to read to younger buddies
  • Students write and present classroom presentations to encourage school-wide recycling
  • Students organize “green teams” to sort food and other compostables at lunch
  • Students create an assembly and promote a school-wide “Ready, Set, Recycle Challenge” monitoring the reduction of landfill waste by improving how students sort materials
  • Students create and share educational posters highlighting their waste audit findings with a call to action
