Services for Businesses and Organizations in Oakland

The City of Oakland contracts with Waste Management of Alameda County for all garbage services. However, this exclusive contract does not extend to recycling, food scraps & plant debris services for businesses and institutions. Oakland businesses are free to make arrangements for recycling with any recycling service provider. The City of Oakland’s Small Business Recycling Program offers services to businesses generating up to two (2) 96-gallon carts per week of mixed recyclables & up to one (1) cubic yard of bundled cardboard through its residential recycling service contracts with Waste Management of Alameda County and California Waste Solutions.

Multi-Family Properties:

The City of Oakland contracts with Waste Management of Alameda County for garbage services. Recycling collection is available to all multi-family buildings at no additional cost, provided by either Waste Management or California Waste Solutions, depending on service area (see map). Free onsite waste and recycling assessments are available upon request.

Plant debris and food scraps collection service is provided to multi-family complexes by Waste Management of Alameda County for a fee and is available upon request.

The City of Oakland provides free multi-family toolkits upon request, including resident door hangers and in-unit collection caddies for residents to use in transferring their recyclables to the centralized collection containers, as supplies last.

Mandatory Recycling Ordinance

The Alameda County Waste Management Authority Mandatory Recycling Ordinance prohibits the disposal of certain readily recyclable materials. It requires businesses and multi-family properties with five or more units to provide on-site recycling to handle the amount of recyclable materials produced at those locations.
