Batteries

Batteries are hazardous and must NOT go in any trash, recycling, or composting bin.

Disposal Options:

Special Instructions:

  • We recommend stockpiling spent batteries in a container, such as a bucket or box, and store in a cool, dry place. When the container is full, bring the batteries to a Household Hazardous Waste Facility or other drop-off location.

Rechargeable Alternatives:

The newer low self-discharge rechargeable batteries (NiMH) can perform well enough to take the place of conventional batteries in most of your common devices, and can greatly reduce this type of waste.  Our fact sheet below provides additional details about using rechargeable batteries.
