Free Household Drop-off Facilities

The Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste program offers a free residential drop-off service. Here are the steps for safely dropping off your leftover toxic products:

  1. Identify hazardous waste

  2. Find the nearest drop-off location

  3. Transport the waste safely

  4. Drop-off at the facility

 

1.  Identify Hazardous Waste

Check your house, garage and garden shed for household products that may be hazardous to your children, pets or the environment. Words such as "danger," "warning," "caution," "poisonous" and "flammable" on the labels can mean a product is toxic. Label the toxic products you find as a reminder to use them up and dispose of them safely. Get more information about common hazardous materials.

 

2.  Find the Nearest Drop-off Location

There are four Household Hazardous Waste drop-off facilities in Alameda County. These facilities accept a wide variety of wastes and offer the most comprehensive service in the county. Alameda County residents transporting wastes they generated in the course of living in and maintaining their place of residence can drop-off materials for free. 3.  Package and Transport the Waste Safely

We recommend placing waste materials in boxes in your vehicle's trunk or storage area. Pack the wastes so they will not slide, tip over, spill or break during transport. Please bring proof of residency with you (driver's license, tax bill, or utility bill showing your current Alameda County address).

  • All materials must be packaged in sturdy, non-leaking, closed containers.
  • If you have a leaking container, place it in a larger, non-leaking container (such as a plastic bucket available from paint stores); include the original label or a note with as much information as possible about the material and its ingredients.
  • Do not mix different wastes in the same container.
  • Place the materials upright in your vehicle for safety.
  • No individual container may be greater than 5 gallons or 50 pounds in size.

How Much Can I Bring?

State law limits the total amount you may transport in one vehicle to 125 pounds or 15 gallons. Wastes must be transported by a resident of the household which generated the waste.

 

4.  Drop-off at the Facility

Once you are at the facility simply stay in your car and attendants will greet you, ask you to fill out a waste delivery form, and unload your wastes for you. Please bring proof of residency with you (a driver's license, tax bill, or utility bill showing your current Alameda County address).

At your request, they will save your motor oil and gasoline cans once they're emptied. Label them with your name and phone number; they must be picked up on the same day after 3:00 p.m.

Don't forget:

  • Pack your items safely
  • Fill out the delivery form beforehand to save time
  • Bring ID proving your Alameda County residency
