How Much Good Stuff Are You Throwing Away?

Surveys show that Alameda County residents believe they are doing a great job of recycling. But the data from StopWaste's Benchmark Service tells a different story. Most of us are putting too much good stuff—especially food scraps and food soiled paper—in the garbage.

The best way to tell if you are a Fantastic Recycler or Just OK is to actually measure how much recyclable and compostable material your household puts in the garbage. Here's how:

  • Individual households: Download this form for instructions on how to measure how much good stuff is in your garbage.
  • Groups of residents, community groups or businesses: StopWaste can provide a staff person and the equipment needed (gloves, tarps, scales) to help you sort and evaluate what's in your garbage. For information, email benchmark@stopwaste.org.
