You may receive letters or notifications from StopWaste, Alameda County cities, waste service providers, or environmental health departments. These letters notify you of the rules or warn you of a potential fine.


What to Do

Follow the instructions provided on your letter to avoid a future citation and fine. Letters typically reference one or more of these requirements:

  1. Get Service — Subscribe to compost and recycling collection (learn more)
  2. Set Up Indoor Bins — Place color-coded, labeled bins for compost, recycling, and garbage (learn more)
  3. Sort Materials Correctly — Put materials in the right bins and educate staff and tenants (learn more)
  4. Donate Surplus Food — Certain food-generating businesses must recover and donate edible surplus food (learn more)

Who Sends These Letters?

You may receive correspondence from any of these partners:

  • StopWaste (Alameda County Waste Management Authority)
  • Your city government
  • Your waste service provider (garbage hauler)
  • Alameda County Department of Environmental Health
