A new compost hub has opened in Oakland making it the city’s first, in partnership with Acta Non Verba: Youth Urban Farm Project, a nonprofit committed to elevating life for youth and families in Oakland through urban farming and access to natural environment. Alameda County residents, as of May 8, can visit the hub located at 2847 Peralta Street in West Oakland to pick up free compost and get resources to learn about how to use the compost to build healthy soil in their home gardens. Residents can pick up compost at the farm during its open hours, which are Tuesday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Oakland’s hub is the 10th hub to open in Alameda County. First launched in 2022, these hubs, often located at urban farms or community gardens, serve as community spaces where residents can pick up free, high-quality compost in bulk and learn about how to use compost. Hosted by cities or community organizations, these hubs also help jurisdictions meet SB 1383 procurement targets and reward residents for their efforts in sorting organic waste into the green bin, which produces compost.
StopWaste plays a key role by providing start-up support and technical assistance, facilitating partnerships between cities and community organizations, supplying educational materials, and helping track impact. StopWaste will continue to connect jurisdictions with urban farm and community partners to launch more hubs countywide and to expand access to broader, more diverse communities.
