WMA Board Endorses Proposition 67 - Plastic Bag Ban Referendum

October 6, 2016

The Alameda County Waste Management Authority voted to adopt a support position on Proposition 67, the Plastic Bag Ban Referendum, at its September 28 meeting. Proposition 67 prohibits grocery and other stores from providing customers single–use plastic or paper carryout bags but permits sale of recycled paper bags and reusable bags.

The proposed state law closely models our own Reusable Bag Ordinance (2012-02), which was adopted in 2012 and greatly reduced bag purchases by affected stores.  A “yes” vote on Proposition 67 implements a statewide bag ban that will apply to cities and counties that do not already have their own single use carryout bag law.
