Success StoriesElementary, middle and high school students from across the County have been showing fans how to properly sort recyclables and compostables from trash at Cal football and basketball games as part of our partnership with Cal Athletics which began in 2014. Now Cal Athletes are helping out at the schools.

During the last two years, StopWaste has been working with Memorial Tabernacle Church in North Oakland and their Youth Going Green (YGG) Program to help spread the word about the importance of composting, recycling, and energy efficiency programs. We are excited to share the series of tutorial videos we made with their help.

Staff from StopWaste and Alameda County were recent recipients of local industry awards at the 2016 California Resource Recovery Association (CRRA) Conference in Sacramento this August.

On January 22, 2016, StopWaste hosted our Alameda County C&D Working Group to discuss recent updates and pending changes to the C&D industry. Topics included the new CALGreen 2016 code changes that require 65% C&D diversion statewide (as of January 1, 2017), updating local C&D ordinances, and efforts around regional coordination of C&D facility diversion rates.
Addressing food waste through prevention, redistribution and composting is an emerging focus for city leaders. In the attached article are steps that elected officials, city managers and other leaders can take to make food waste prevention a widespread practice based on interviews with food waste reduction experts, including Staff from StopWaste.

Congratulations to Cal for earning the first-place award in the Pac-12 Road To Zero Waste Challenge for the second year in a row. The Cal Zero Waste Team partnered with elementary and middle school volunteers from the Ready Set Recycle schools’ program to educate fans about recycling.
