Cal Athletics Partnership

On a crisp December morning, more than 20 Cal athletes put on garden gloves, picked up tools and shovels, and got to work at the Hoover Elementary Garden Community Work Day in Oakland. The work day provided a fun event of reciprocity since our partnership with Cal Athletics began in 2014.

Elementary, middle and high school students from across the County have been showing fans how to properly sort recyclables and compostables from trash at Cal football and basketball games. Student volunteers, along with families and staff, from Hoover Elementary (Oakland), Bancroft Middle School (San Leandro), Irvington High School (Fremont) and Berkeley High School have proudly brought their recycling and green bin expertise to Cal fans; and cheered on the Ready, Set, Recycle Sort-Off contenders on the field. With the help of student volunteers, Cal won the Pac-12 Road To Zero Waste Challenge two years in a row.

All are welcome to join Cal Athletes for our next work day at Hesperian Elementary in San Leandro on January 16. It's sure to be a lot of fun.
