Multifamily Buildings

In 2017, the StopWaste Energy Council received a $1 million grant from the California Energy Commission to manage a project that will increase the number of energy upgrades in the California's existing multifamily buildings through policy research and tool development.

Green Building Guidelines and Multifamily Green Building Guidelines

StopWaste first published these comprehensive planning, design and construction resources in the mid-2000's. The guidelines were thoroughly researched by building industry experts, and vetted by stakeholders including local government staff, architects, project managers and developers. StopWaste's Green Building Guidelines and Multifamily Green Building Guidelines helped accelerate the adoption of green building principles and practices regionally and nationally.

Built Environment

Circular Economy

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is a leading nonprofit organization working to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. StopWaste is a Ellen MacArthur Foundation Circular Economy 100 USA member.

In this capacity, we've partnered with Arup to explore how local governments can use circular economy principles to improve buildings and communities.

How much C&D debris do construction projects in Alameda County generate?

In 2017, StopWaste analyzed 2,000 construction and demolition waste management plans from five Alameda County cities for the years 2014-2017.

The data analysis included tons generated (disposed + recycled), project square footage, and project and building types. This table provides estimates for construction and demolition waste generation based on building and project type.

Circular Economy in the Built Environment: Opportunities for Local Government Leadership

Authored by StopWaste and Arup, this primer provides an overview of a circular economy framework for the built environment at the community, neighborhood and building scales. The ideas and concepts included here are intended to stimulate local government decision-makers and staff in Alameda County and beyond to consider policies and actions in their jurisdictions. It illustrates concepts with real-world examples of sites and policies. The document is intended to initiate conversation and action among public policymakers, public agency staff and other partners.

What are the climate change benefits of C&D reuse and recycling?

When organic materials such as wood and cardboard break down in landfills, they produce methane, which is 20 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Landfills account for 34% of methane emissions in the United States, so reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Recycling 1 ton of cardboard boxes, for example, reduces greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 4 tons of carbon dioxide.
