What's Accepted at Events

Events accept most of the same materials as permanent facilities, plus medications and controlled substances (which permanent facilities cannot accept).

  • Batteries
  • Paint and paint-related products
  • Electronics
  • Motor oil, gasoline, and auto fluids
  • Pest and garden chemicals
  • Household cleaners
  • Propane tanks
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Sharps containers (needles, syringes, lancets)
  • Medications and prescriptions (including controlled substances)

Note: Motor oil and gas containers cannot be returned at events (unlike permanent facilities, where staff can save your emptied containers).

Not Accepted at Events

  • Treated wood waste and railroad ties
  • Large appliances (refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, A/C units)
  • Construction and demolition waste
  • Compressed gas cylinders (except propane)
  • Smoke detectors
  • Asbestos
  • Explosives, ammunition, fireworks
  • Radioactive materials

Tips for Attending

  • Pack safely — use sturdy, sealed containers, keep chemicals separated, and transport them in your trunk or cargo area
  • Bring ID — you'll need proof of Alameda County residency
  • Stay in your vehicle — staff will unload your items
