StopWaste plays an active role in shaping the policies that govern waste management, recycling, and resource conservation of carbon-intensive building materials and energy in California and Alameda County. From advocating for state legislation to administering local ordinances and planning frameworks, our policy work connects the goals set by lawmakers through the regulatory processes to the programs and services that serve our communities.

How We Engage

StopWaste's policy involvement takes several forms:

  • Advocacy — Supporting state legislation aligned with our strategic goals in waste prevention, circular economy, construction innovation along with energy efficiency and electrification
  • Implementation — Administering local ordinances and serving as a collaborative and supportive agency for jurisdictions implementing state mandates within Alameda County. Connecting BayREN’s programs with Alameda County residents and businesses
  • Leadership — Holding seats on statewide advisory boards and working in coalition with local governments and advocacy organizations to promote common sense solutions to challenging issues
  • Planning — Maintaining the countywide waste management plan that guides infrastructure and program decisions across all member agencies

Legislative Priorities
