Electronic waste contains valuable recyclable materials — but also toxic components like lead, mercury, and cadmium. Electronics never belong in your trash or recycling bins. Free disposal options are available throughout the county.

HHW Facilities (Free)

All four Alameda County HHW facilities accept electronics at no cost.

Retailer Take-Back Programs

Many electronics retailers accept old devices:

  • Best Buy — most electronics
  • Staples — computers and accessories
  • Apple — Apple products
  • Cell phone carriers — old phones

Manufacturer Programs

Many manufacturers offer recycling for their products. Check the brand's website for details.


Before You Dispose

Erase Personal Data

  1. Back up important files
  2. Sign out of all accounts
  3. Factory reset the device
  4. Remove SIM cards and memory cards

Donate Working Devices

Working electronics can go to schools, nonprofits, Goodwill, or local repair cafes.

Check for Trade-In Value

Many retailers and manufacturers offer credit for newer devices.


Special Handling

TVs and Monitors

CRT (tube) monitors contain lead and require special handling. All HHW facilities accept them.

Batteries
