Safe medication disposal protects water supplies, prevents accidental poisoning, and reduces drug misuse. Never flush medications or put them in the trash — free, convenient options are available across the county.
Important: HHW facilities cannot accept medications. Use pharmacy kiosks or one-day events instead.
Pharmacy Drop-off Kiosks (Free)
Over 80 pharmacies, hospitals, and other locations throughout Alameda County have self-service medication disposal kiosks — no appointment needed.
Accepted at most locations:
- Prescription medications
- Over-the-counter medications
- Controlled substances (narcotics, sleeping pills, ADHD medications)
- Vitamins and supplements
One-Day HHW Events
One-day HHW events also accept medications and controlled substances — unlike permanent HHW facilities.
Mail-Back Programs
Some pharmacies offer prepaid mail-back envelopes for medication disposal. Ask at your pharmacy.
How to Prepare Medications
Pills and Tablets
- Pour pills into a clear plastic bag (protects your privacy and reduces processing costs)
- Different medications can be mixed together
- Black out personal information on bottles before disposing
Liquids and Creams
- Keep in original containers with caps secured
- Black out personal information
- Place in a sealed plastic bag
What NOT to Do
- Don't flush (unless packaging specifically says to)
- Don't put in trash — accessible to children, pets, or others
- Don't pour down drains — contaminates water supply
- Don't take to HHW facilities — they cannot accept medications
