Businesses, nonprofits, schools, and multi-family properties must sort materials into the proper bins (compost, recycling, and garbage), check bins periodically, and educate staff or tenants about the rules at least annually.


What Goes Where

Materials must be separated into three categories:

Your Responsibilities

1. Check Bins Regularly

Property owners and managers must inspect both indoor containers and collection carts, correcting problems when they occur. Making sure you have proper stickers and signage will help ensure proper sorting.

2. Educate Staff and Tenants

Training is required:

  • At least annually for all staff and tenants
  • During move-in/move-out for residential properties
  • When violations occur as a corrective measure
