The 4Rs Climate Action Project brings project-based environmental learning to 5th–12th grade classrooms across Alameda County. StopWaste educators lead students through investigating real environmental issues and developing waste reduction solutions for their schools, households, and communities.
Program Structure
Up to three 2-hour lessons facilitated by StopWaste educators:
Accordion
Students learn environmental concepts and conduct waste audits at home and school, gathering real data about what's being thrown away.
Students analyze audit data, investigate science concepts, and develop action projects with outreach materials to communicate their findings and solutions.
Students put their solutions into action and evaluate results, measuring the impact of their waste reduction efforts.
Student Projects
Projects vary based on student findings but typically include:
- Campus waste reduction campaigns
- Sorting station improvements
- Peer education materials (posters, videos, presentations)
- Food waste prevention initiatives
- Classroom or schoolwide challenges
Curriculum Alignment
Lessons align with Common Core English and Mathematics Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and Climate Literacy Standards. The program supports learning objectives in math (data analysis), science (environmental systems), and language arts (communication and persuasion).
