Livermore, CA – A thin layer of compost applied to grasslands could help fight climate change by capturing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in the soil, recent research shows. UC Merced Professor Rebecca Ryals and a team of researchers, ranchers, and public agencies will demonstrate this practice for the first time in the East Bay. The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) recently announced its latest round of grant recipients for the Healthy Soils Program, distributing $12.48 million throughout the state. A team composed of the Alameda County Resource Conservation District (ACRCD), StopWaste, UC Merced, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and Point Blue Conservation Science, is one of 23 recipients selected for an on-farm Healthy Soils Demonstration Grant to test the efficacy of compost application in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and sequestering carbon on rangeland soil in eastern Alameda

The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) recognized StopWaste as one of four inaugural WaterSmart Partners at a ceremony on March 12, 2019. StopWaste previously received WaterSmart designation in 2011 for on-site water-saving practices. The Partnership designation is new for WaterSmart, and EBMUD recognized StopWaste for its long-standing partnership with the utility, and for programs that have contributed to water savings, such as trainings and resources for landscape professionals.
