Businesses, nonprofits, schools, and multi-family properties must sort materials into the proper bins (compost, recycling, and garbage), check bins periodically, and educate staff or tenants about the rules at least annually.
What Goes Where
Materials must be separated into three categories:
| Compost (Green) | Recycling (Blue) | Garbage (Black/Gray) |
|---|---|---|
| Food scraps | Paper & cardboard | Non-recyclable plastics |
| Food-soiled paper | Bottles & cans | Chip bags & wrappers |
| Coffee grounds & filters | Clean containers | Expanded polystyrene |
| Napkins & paper towels | Glass jars | Broken ceramics |

2. Educate Staff and Tenants
Training is required:
- At least annually for all staff and tenants
- During move-in/move-out for residential properties
- When violations occur as a corrective measure
Training Options
- Share this 5-minute training video on workplace recycling and composting
- Distribute flyers and written reminders about sorting rules
- Custom training from StopWaste's field team (virtual or on-site)
