In California, there are more than 3 million multifamily buildings, accounting for approximately 24% of residential energy use and about 11% of all building energy use in the state. Roughly one-third of the Bay Area's housing stock is in multifamily buildings, and the majority of these buildings were constructed prior to 1978 when energy efficiency standards were first adopted into California's building code.
Energy and water efficiency improvements in multifamily buildings can deliver many benefits, including helping renters and owners cut costs, improving the health, safety, and comfort of homes, and supporting municipalities in meeting their greenhouse gas reduction goals.
StopWaste has worked to advance energy efficiency in the multifamily sector for more than 20 years. StopWaste currently leads the Bay Area Multifamily Building Enhancements (BAMBE) program through BayREN and has conducted policy research, developed tools, and convened a statewide multifamily working group to support the broader adoption of energy upgrades in the sector.
