Leftover household hazardous waste should never be thrown in the trash or recycling bin, flushed down the toilet, or dumped down the drain or storm sewer. Alameda County offers multiple free, convenient options for residents to properly and safely disposing of these materials. Click on the links in the table below to make an appointment. Medicine and Prescription Drugs
We CAN NOT ACCEPT Medicine and Prescription Drugs at our Oakland, Livermore, and Hayward drop-off facilities. These items can be dropped off at the Fremont HHW drop-off facility or at over 80 pharmacies and clinics that have self-service kiosks.
Prohibited Items:
- Medicine and Prescription Drugs
- Treated Wood Waste including Railroad Ties, click for more information
- Compressed Gas Cylinders (other than Propane)
- Large Appliances (A/C, Refrigerators, Stoves, Washers, etc.)
- Construction and Demolition Waste
- Asbestos
- Explosives
- Radioactives

Free Drop-Off Facilities
The Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste program offers a free residential drop-off service at our facilities in Oakland, Hayward, Fremont, and Livermore.
These facilities accept a wide variety of wastes and offer the most comprehensive service in the county. Alameda County residents transporting wastes they generated while living in and maintaining their residence can drop-off materials for free.
